Autism and Suicidality: Evidence and Best Practice

Join us for an online session delivered by Hear 2 Help as part of National Safeguarding Adults Week.

Here to Help is a new project from SJOG which aims to raise awareness and provide information, advice and guidance regarding autism and suicidality across the Northeast.

People with autism are 9 times more likely to die by suicide than non-neurodiverse people.

Hear to Help work across all 5 Tees Valley regions (Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington and Redcar and Cleveland).  They work with autistic people 14+, and those who support them, including parents, carers and professionals.

By the end of the session, you should be able to:

  • Identify helpful and unhelpful words to use when describing both autism and suicidality
  • Identify 3 warning signs of suicidality distinct to autistic individuals.
  • Explain how suicide risk assessments need to be adapted for autistic individuals
  • Describe 2 strategies to support autistic individuals in crisis.
  • Apply your learning to 3 case studies.
  • Evaluate how you will change your practice based on today’s training.
