Nikki is a trainer and social work consultant who works across the public sector with specialisms in Safeguarding Adults, Mental Capacity and Mental Health. She is experienced in working closely with professionals in Local Authorities, NHS, police and Courts.
Aim:
The course aims to increase the knowledge of practitioners and managers who work with adults at risk in the purpose and function of a complex safeguarding enquiry, and to improve skills and confidence for conducting a safeguarding enquiry.
Please note that we offer 2 versions of this course aimed at different groups of staff. Please only apply for the version that is applicable to you – delegates should not apply for both versions.
Who should apply?
The content is suitable for professionally qualified and experienced staff involved with adults at risk who may be required to lead a complex safeguarding enquiry. This course is relevant for staff who are involved with complex investigations which may include those where Court of Protection proceedings may be likely, where there may be a police investigation or in situations where there is institutional abuse. It is expected that delegates will already be undertaking enquiries and this may include Safeguarding Nurses Social Workers, Community Nurses, Police, Fire Brigade and Commissioners of services.
Course Content:
- The legal context of Safeguarding, including Making Safeguarding Personal, The Care Act 2014 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005
- The purpose and aim of a Safeguarding Enquiry and how it should link to the outcomes identified by the individual
- The role of the investigator
- Completing an enquiry – information gathering, consideration of capacity, communicating with the individual, families and perpetrators
- How to investigate in conjunction with other procedures including HR processes or police enquiries and Court of Protection
- How to keep people safe
- Professional Curiosity and Professional Challenge
- How to investigate complex and high risk situations
- How to manage conflict
- Report writing in the context of potential court proceedings
- Providing evidence at a Safeguarding meeting
Entry Requirements:
Staff will be expected to have relevant prior training (i.e. in Safeguarding Adults, MCA), at level 1 and 2, prior to attending this course and should also have some prior experience of involvement in safeguarding enquiries. Completion of the TSAB Safeguarding E Learning and The Mental Capacity Act & Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards workbook will meet this requirement.

Please note that submitting a form does not guarantee a place, however we suggest that you provisionally book the date in your diary. These training sessions are usually oversubscribed and therefore allocation of places will be determined on a number of factors. Please ensure that you provide as much detail as possible on the ‘why you want to attend’ section of the form. If you have already registered as a user please remember to log into your account prior to completing the form.
You will be informed of the outcome of your application by email from the TSAB Business Unit. Places are not confirmed until this point. If you are unsuccessful your name may be added to a waiting list.
Our courses are free to attend, however we do limit the number of places that we offer to ensure that all delegates have the opportunity to participate during the session, so if your place is confirmed and you are no longer able to attend please inform the Business Unit by email as soon as possible so that we have the chance to offer your place to another delegate . Any cancellations must be received by email no later than 11.30pm on Monday 27th January 2025. Cancellation after this date or failure to attend both sessions will result in a £50 charge.
