Discriminatory Abuse: ‘What lies beneath’ in safeguarding

Join us on Monday 10th March 2025 between 2pm – 2:45pm for a webinar on Discriminatory Abuse, delivered by guest speaker Karl Mason.

Karl Mason is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Royal Holloway, University of London and is also a registered social worker, having qualified in 2002. He teaches, researches and works with local authorities in addressing safeguarding matters and is a SAR reviewer and safeguarding adults consultant. Karl is particularly interested in the ways in which safeguarding and adult social care work for those with additional marginalities, such as homelessness or experiences of discrimination.

Discriminatory abuse has been a category of abuse for almost 25 years but it comprises less than 1% of enquiries nationally. Karl is a member of the Partners in Health and Care advisory group on discriminatory abuse and has published several academic articles and blogs/podcasts on the subject. He will talk us through the evidence base on discriminatory abuse and ask us to consider our own safeguarding practice with people who have protected characteristics.

This session will be held online via Microsoft Teams. Please put a hold in your diary. Formal invites will be sent out closer to the date.
